The basketball and volleyball coaches at Shelbyville High School now know what the sectional pairings will look like for the Golden Bears’ first season competing as a Class 3A school.

On Monday, the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Executive Committee approved the sectional assignments in six team sports for the next two school years.

The Executive Committee unanimously accepted the recommendations of the respective realignment committees which determined the sectional groupings in meetings earlier this month for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

Three committees consisting of school administrators representing each IHSAA district and class were constructed to realign the sports. The football committee totaled 18 administrators, the basketball and volleyball committee was made up of 12 members and the soccer committee consisted of nine individuals.

The baseball and softball sectional realignment committee will meet later this summer and their recommendations will be presented to the Executive Committee for approval at its Aug. 27 meeting.

Host sites for the next two years will be determined by athletic administrators in each sectional this summer.

Sectional 28 features Beech Grove, Greenwood, Indian Creek, New Palestine, Roncalli, Rushville and Shelbyville.

Triton Central is assigned to Sectional 43 with Christel House, Eastern Hancock, Heritage Christian, Indianapolis Scecina and Irvington Prep.

IHSAA approves full recognition for Boys Volleyball, Girls Wrestling

The Board of Directors of the Indiana High School Athletic Association approved full recognition for the sports of Boys Volleyball and Girls Wrestling beginning next school year (2024-2025).

The Board of Directors, led by this year’s President, Stacy Adams of Valparaiso High School, and Vice President ,Chad Gilbert of Charlestown High School, approved 12 proposals, eight failed to receive enough support, and one other was tabled during the meeting Monday afternoon in Indianapolis

With full recognition, an IHSAA state tournament will now be established for both sports with those details being announced in the coming months. Girls Wrestling will be a winter sport while Boys Volleyball will be played in the spring just as they have in previous years and during the IHSAA’s Emerging Sport Process.

The Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association has been administering its state tournament since 1994 while the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association has been conducting a girls wrestling state tournament since 2017.

After being added to the Emerging Sport Process in 2022, both have seen significant growth over the last 24 months.

Girls Wrestling now touts more than 1,400 individuals representing 177 different schools while Boys Volleyball teams have now climbed to more than 100.

They became the latest sports to be fully recognized following Unified Flag Football in 2018 and Unified Track and Field in 2013. Both are co-ed sports as part of the IHSAA’s partnership with Special Olympics Indiana.

A measure that would have added the sport of Girls Lacrosse to the Emerging Sport Process was tabled to the June Executive Committee meeting.

Other items:

  • A proposal that would change the criteria for classifying schools based on the percentage of member schools sponsoring a team and entering the state tournament the previous year failed for lack of motion. Currently, 95% of schools must play a sport for it to have four classes. The measure authored by Franklin Community Principal Steve Ahaus called for that to be lowered to 75% with 50% needed for three classes and 25% for two classes. The board did instruct the IHSAA staff to further study this measure for consideration for the next realignment cycle in two years.
  • A change to the Tournament Success Factor failed 1-17. With several team sports changing formats to a one-game regional and two-game semistate, a proposal from Yorktown Principal Stacey Brewer called for a current threshold of three points (i.e. one regional championship and a sectional championship) accumulated to continue playing in a higher class be increased to four points (i.e. two consecutive regional championships). The board changed this threshold from two points to three points a year ago.
  • A pair of changes to the Out-of-Season Limited Contact Program that would allow three sessions per week for two hours per session for team and individual sports was unanimously approved (18-0). The proposal was made by Commissioner Paul Neidig on behalf of recommendations from the participation study committee.
  • A measure proposed on behalf of the Indiana Volleyball Coaches Association to raise the number of players on a non-school team from three to four failed 0-18.
  • An additional moratorium week determined by each member school was unanimously approved (18-0) and amended to take effect next summer (summer of 2025). The additional week of no contact between athletes and coaches must occur between Week 48 of one school year and Week 4 of the next school year.
  • Approved by an 18-0 vote the timeframe an affected party may seek a review of an adverse decision increase from seven to 30 days.
  • Approved 18-0 a proposal that now requires the principals at both the sending and received schools in transfer cases to consult one another and provide written verification that there are no athletic motivations and that a transfer is in the best interest of the student.
  • Regarding the Undue Influence rule, the board approved 18-0 that a student who receives no eligibility in a sport due to a Past Link, may have full eligibility in other sports at their new school.
  • The group voted down a proposal on behalf of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association that would have moved the first authorized practice date one week earlier from Monday of Week 37 to Monday of Week 36.
  • A pair of submissions for baseball and softball that would have provided an option for a varsity player to exceed the game limit if the player participates on a sub-varsity level to facilitate a full roster were voted down 0-18.
  • A proposal from Roncalli Principal Kevin Banich that asserted beach volleyball is a distinct sport as opposed to indoor volleyball and would allow student-athletes to play both during the high school volleyball season failed to generate any support (0-18). In straw polling from the membership, the measure only received minimal support (24.7% in favor).
  • The elections for next year’s leadership of the board and Executive Committee were also held. Larry Cochren of Washington High School was voted president of the 2024-25 Board of Directors and Jim Brown of Fishers High School was elected vice president.

Shelbyville was originally scheduled to host Batesville Friday but that fell through and the Tigers jumped onto the Golden Bears’ schedule for a matchup of two programs that reached the semistate round of the state tournament in 2022 (Shelbyville) and 2023.

Eads struck out the side in the top of the first and Addie Stieneker walked in the bottom half of the inning and later scored on a wild pitch for an early 1-0 lead.

Eads made quick work of the Tigers (4-6) in the second inning then the Golden Bears extended the lead to 3-0 against Triton Central starting pitcher Lillian Fillippinie. Gracie Crafton doubled and scored on a Kali Laycock sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Stieneker delivered a run-scoring single that plated Aaliyah White, who walked two batters earlier.

Crafton took over in the circle and did not allow a Triton Central hit until the seventh inning. She did walk three over four innings and allowed a fourth-inning run that got the Tigers on the scoreboard.

Eads blasted a solo home run in the fourth and again in the seventh before the Tigers rallied and forced Eads back into the circle.

Fillippinie led off the seventh with a double. She scored on Madison Collins’ sacrifice fly. Two Shelbyville errors and a hit batter by Crafton brought leadoff hitter Jalynn Keith to the plate and she doubled to make it 5-4.

Eads stepped back in and struck out Jayda McKee to end the game.

Shelbyville 2, East Central 1

At St. Leon Saturday afternoon, the Golden Bears needed an extra inning to improve to 3-0 against potential Sectional 14 opponents this season.

Eads collected 15 strikeouts in eight innings while the Shelbyville offense struggled to get into gear against East Central left-hander Paige Hotze.

Shelbyville (11-5) took the lead in the fourth inning when Destiney Johnson singled, moved up on a pair of groundouts and scored on Hailey Maulden’s infield single.

The Trojans (6-5) countered in the fifth with a Lexi Hatmaker double. Kate Dudley drove her in with the second hit of the inning to tie the game once again.

In the eighth, Anna Shearer (photo) drove in Johnson from first base with a double in the gap and Eads added three more strikeouts around a fielding error to secure the win.

Shelbyville will attempt to go to 4-0 against Sectional 14 foes Monday at Whiteland (8-7).

Prep Report: Class 4A, No. 4 New Palestine stays unbeaten with hard-fought win at Shelbyville

One of the state’s most ferocious hitting teams met one of the state’s top pitchers Thursday at Shelbyville High School.

Class 4A, No. 4 New Palestine arrived for the Hoosier Heritage Conference showdown with Cheyenne Eads and the Golden Bears unbeaten at 9-0 and averaging 12.8 runs per game. The Dragons scored 14 runs Wednesday night in a win at 4A No. 8 Center Grove.

Eads accepted the challenge and went to work with a pesky defense behind her that did not falter. The University of Indianapolis recruit scattered 11 hits over seven innings and struck out eight but the Shelbyville offense could not get a big hit off New Palestine starting pitcher Courtney Study and suffered a 4-1 loss, ending the team’s seven-game win streak.

Eads blasted a solo home run to start the bottom half of the first inning for the Golden Bears’ only run. That home run matched Allie Blum’s solo home run in the top of the first. The University of Kentucky commit had three hits in the win and scored two of the Dragons’ four runs.

Sydney Oliver had two hits and drove in two runs.

Participants now inbounds with one point of contact in high school wrestling

Beginning with the 2024-25 season, high school wrestlers will be inbounds with only one point of contact of either wrestler inside or on the boundary line.

This fundamental change to high school wrestling was one of six major changes impacting almost 30 rules recommended by the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee at its April 1-3 meeting in Indianapolis. All recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Previously, high school wrestlers were considered to be inbounds if a total of two supporting points of either wrestler were inside or on the boundary line. The two supporting points could be two supporting points of one wrestler or one supporting point of each wrestler inside or on the boundary line.

“Without increasing risk, this change eliminates the subjectivity of the out-of-bounds call,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of sports and student services and liaison to the Wrestling Rules Committee. “The change also helps officials to call ‘out of bounds’ more consistently, and it provides wrestlers, coaches and spectators a better understanding of out of bounds.”

While the One Point of Contact change will be noted under the definition of Inbounds in Rule 5-15, it also impacts a number of other sections in Rule 5 on Definitions, as well as Rule 6-4-1 on Stopping and Starting the Match.

In addition to the One Point of Contact change, points awarded for a Near-Fall have been revised in high school wrestling. Overall, the changes simplify the points awarded based on how long the wrestler is held in near-fall criteria. The change in Rule 5-11-3 is as follows:

Two points will be awarded when near-fall criteria are held for two seconds, three points for three seconds, four points for four seconds and five points if the defensive wrestler is injured, indicates an injury or bleeding occurs after the four-point near-fall has been earned. These changes will affect other rules including individual match scoring in Rule 9.

“The goal in wrestling is to pin the opponent,” Hopkins said. “Changing the near-fall points should motivate wrestlers to work for a fall.”

In another change in scoring rules, opportunities to earn more points will also be available when executing a Takedown. Beginning next season, wrestlers will be awarded three match points instead of two when securing a takedown.

The committee also approved a change regarding the Technical Fall. Rule 5-11-4a now states that “if a takedown or reversal, straight to a near-fall criteria creates a 15-point advantage, the match shall continue until the near-fall criteria is no longer met. Conclusion of the near-fall criteria is immediate.” The change clarifies when the technical fall has concluded in relation to the near-fall criteria being met. Hopkins said the offensive wrestler cannot be penalized appropriately after the technical fall has been earned.

In another change, the 10-Foot Circle at the center of wrestling mats is now optional. Wrestlers now will be encouraged to “stay in the center of the mat” instead of “within the 10-foot circle.”

“The committee determined that the starting lines of a mat indicate the center of the mat and the 10-foot circle is no longer needed,” Hopkins said. “With the new mat designs that have a large mascot or logos, it gives a refreshing look to the mats. Wrestlers and officials know where the center of the mat is located without the 10-foot circle.”

Finally, the committee approved a new Referee’s Time-Out Signal. The signal, which is used in many other sports, is both hands/fingers pointing inward to the referee’s chest.

According to the 2022-23 NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, wrestling is the sixth-most popular sport for boys with 259,431 participants in 10,962 schools. It also continues to gain popularity among girls with 50,016 participants in 6,545 schools nationwide.

Indianapolis Colts, IHSAA extend partnership

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced a three-year presenting partnership renewal with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts to continue in support of Indiana high school football.

This marks the 15th year of the agreement first struck in 2009 when the Colts organization began its support of the entire football state tournament, ensuring that the state championship games would continue to be played at Lucas Oil Stadium. At that time, the Colts became the first professional sports franchise in the country to partner with a high school association for this type of sponsorship.

“The IHSAA is so excited and grateful to continue this partnership with the Indianapolis Colts,” said IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig. “Without the Colts and their support, Indiana high school football wouldn’t be as spectacular as it is on Friday nights in the fall.”

“We love and appreciate the values, like preparation, discipline, teamwork and inclusion, that football teaches, so we are honored to support youth and high school football at every level in our state,” said Mike Prior, Colts Football Development Commissioner and former Colts great. “This partnership with the IHSAA continues our commitment to growing the game of football in Indiana and opening opportunities in the sport to all.”

The Colts and IHSAA also have partnered on other initiatives, most notably girls high school flag football. In 2023, the Colts started the Girls Flag Football Pilot League, fueled by Gatorade, with eight high school girls teams representing Indianapolis and South Bend. They also have hosted clinics, jamborees, and other events, with the long-term goal of developing girls flag football as a sanctioned varsity sport in Indiana.
