Indianapolis Colts, IHSAA extend partnership

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced a three-year presenting partnership renewal with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts to continue in support of Indiana high school football.

This marks the 15th year of the agreement first struck in 2009 when the Colts organization began its support of the entire football state tournament, ensuring that the state championship games would continue to be played at Lucas Oil Stadium. At that time, the Colts became the first professional sports franchise in the country to partner with a high school association for this type of sponsorship.

“The IHSAA is so excited and grateful to continue this partnership with the Indianapolis Colts,” said IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig. “Without the Colts and their support, Indiana high school football wouldn’t be as spectacular as it is on Friday nights in the fall.”

“We love and appreciate the values, like preparation, discipline, teamwork and inclusion, that football teaches, so we are honored to support youth and high school football at every level in our state,” said Mike Prior, Colts Football Development Commissioner and former Colts great. “This partnership with the IHSAA continues our commitment to growing the game of football in Indiana and opening opportunities in the sport to all.”

The Colts and IHSAA also have partnered on other initiatives, most notably girls high school flag football. In 2023, the Colts started the Girls Flag Football Pilot League, fueled by Gatorade, with eight high school girls teams representing Indianapolis and South Bend. They also have hosted clinics, jamborees, and other events, with the long-term goal of developing girls flag football as a sanctioned varsity sport in Indiana.

Duncan overcomes knee injury to realize dream of being college athlete

Shelbyville senior Connor Duncan was on the path to playing football at Wabash College. A pregame knee injury on Oct. 6 ended that dream.

What Duncan did not realize was a new option would present itself.

On Wednesday, Duncan signed his letter of intent to compete as a track and field athlete at Franklin College and study Sports Medicine.

“Wabash was the top contender. They were texting me, calling me and emailing me,” said Duncan Wednesday night after friends and family celebrated his accomplishment in the Golden Bear Room at Shelbyville High School. “I am definitely not complaining. I was thinking football all the way up to the injury. God had a plan for me and that plan is track.”

Duncan and the Golden Bears were preparing for kickoff Oct. 6 at McKeand Stadium against Mt. Vernon. Duncan’s right knee buckled and the starting offensive lineman’s career was over.

“I tore the ligament that holds the kneecap in place,” he said. “The only thing keeping the kneecap intact was all the fluid and cartilage and bone floating around inside my knee.”

The severity of the injury meant playing collegiate football was likely not an option.

“I never felt depression but I lost my sense of relying on myself,” he explained. “The first couple of days after (the injury), mom had to help me shower. I couldn’t get up and down the stairs well.

“After I looked at the big picture, it’s not that bad. It definitely did suck walking away from the sport I love.”

Duncan had made his peace with not playing football again and was searching for his next educational experience. That led to a campus visit at Franklin College.

“(Franklin) wasn’t even contacting me about throwing,” said Duncan. “I was actually on a regular college visit and I ran in to (assistant) coach (Taylor) Sadowski. My admissions counselor had set it up. I am super lucky.”

Duncan had a new, old purpose once again – being a college athlete.

“I am really looking forward to excelling at Franklin,” he said with a big smile. “I am willing to prove I have what it takes to be there and show out for Franklin.”

And there is a glimmer of hope he could return to the football field in the future.

“Franklin was talking to me. If it’s there and I am healthy after my first couple of years at Franklin, it is very much a possibility,” said Duncan of being a potential two-sport athlete. “But right now, it is really not in the picture. Track is something I am super happy to be offered  to do at Franklin.”

Duncan believes he is about 80-85% recovered from knee surgery that left him with two sets of hamstrings and four screws in his right knee. It is good enough to get him started on his senior season of track and field once the weather cooperates.

“I want to finish strong,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in the road.”

IHSAA announcement confirms Shelbyville dropping to Class 3A

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has announced the new classifications for IHSAA member schools in the sports of boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer and girls volleyball for the next two school years.

The enrollment figures – the total of boys and girls in grades 9-12 – were submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education last fall and are used to determine the classifications in all team sports.

The four-class sports of baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball are being classified using a new 20-25-25-30 ratio that was approved by the IHSAA Executive Committee last June. That plan places the largest 20% of schools in Class 4A, the next 25% in Class 3A, the next 25% in Class 2A and the smallest 30% in Class A.

Additionally, classifying the four-class sports will be based on the entire membership total and not only those schools participating in each sport effectively keeping sectional alignments across each sport.

Football (six classes) and soccer (three classes) are not affected and will continue as they have in previous years.

Tournament Success Factor points have been totaled over the last two years and specific teams placed in their appropriate class in each sport.

Sectional groupings for each sport (except for softball and baseball) will be announced later this spring following approval of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Softball and baseball sectional groupings will be released in August following the committee’s first meeting of the new school year.

The announcement officially drops Shelbyville down from Class 4A to Class 3A beginning in the fall of 2024.

Girls Volleyball

The first sport affected will be girls volleyball. The Golden Bears will be the 10th largest school in Class 3A.

Shelbyville is the 90th largest school in Indiana based on its enrollment of 1,093 students. East Central is now the smallest school in 4A at 1,241 students. Three smaller schools, Yorktown (812), Bellmont (610) and Providence (237) will be competing in 4A for the next two seasons based on Tournament Success Factor points.

Potential 3A sectional opponents for the Golden Bears for all affected sports will be Greenwood (1,211), New Palestine (1,209), Indianapolis Cathedral (1,172), Indianapolis Crispus Attucks (1,170), Roncalli (1,082), Connersville (930), Beech Grove (892), New Castle (824), Batesville (670), Greensburg (662) and Rushville (645).

Boys basketball

East Central, the 80th largest school in Indiana, is again the cutoff for Class 4A based on enrollment. Scottsburg, enrollment level 726, will compete in 4A the next two seasons based off recent postseason success.

The smallest school in 3A based on enrollment is Tippecanoe Valley at 543. Brownstown Central (469) and Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian (270) also will compete in 3A the next two seasons.

Cascade, enrollment 546, moves up to 3A from 2A.

Girls basketball

A total of 21 schools move down from 4A to 3A. Shelbyville is again the 10th largest school in 3A.

Illiana Christian (544) is the only school moving up from 2A to 3A based on enrollment.

Baseball, Softball

The enrollment classifications have not yet been released for the two spring sports. Shelbyville is expected to follow suit with the other four-class sports and drop to 3A.

Shelby County

The IHSAA’s new classification system does not affect Triton Central (468) as a 2A school nor Morristown (169), Southwestern (183) and Waldron (175) as Class A schools.

Regional schools dropping from 2A to Class A based on enrollment figures are Knightstown (316), Milan (315), North Decatur (314) and Hauser (272).

Eads stars in Shelbyville's 7-2 win over Jennings County

First-year Shelbyville softball head coach Megan Leffler knows she can win a lot of games this season just by turning the ball over to senior pitcher Cheyenne Eads. But with six games on the schedule this week, the Golden Bears will have to find ways to win games without Eads’ dominant presence in the circle.

On Saturday, Eads overpowered Jennings County from the circle and in the batter’s box. The University of Indianapolis commit tossed a three-hitter while striking out 14 Panthers and she had four hits including a double and her first home run of the season to lead Shelbyville to a 7-2 victory.

“She is not showing it but she is holding on to a lot pressure,” said Leffler, a former hitting pitcher during her high school career. “I am just telling her to relax and enjoy your senior year.”

Shelbyville (2-0) started slow Saturday morning against Marian softball commit Mackenzie Matern. The senior allowed single runs in the first and third innings while battling Eads, who was racking up strikeouts.

The Golden Bears scored in the first on back-to-back doubles by Eads and Addie Stieneker. In the third, Eads singled and Addysyn Wettrick was thrown out at home trying to score from second base. Eads advanced on the play at home and the throw from the catcher sailed into the outfield which allowed Eads to score and make it 2-0.

Jennings County (2-2) got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Matern stole home in the fourth after starting the inning hit by a pitch. Emma Clapp doubled to start the fifth and eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Shelbyville responded in the fifth with a Wettrick single. She scored on Destiney Johnson’s sacrifice fly.

Eads’ two-run home run chased Matern from the pitcher’s circle in the sixth. She already allowed an Anna Shearer home run to start the inning and Hailey Maulden scored on a Kali Laycock double.

Eads has allowed four hits and four walks while striking out 24 in her first two appearances this season, including a 6-0 win Tuesday at Seymour.

“I was pretty impressed (Tuesday). As always, first game I was nervous but I think I was probably more nervous than the kids,” said the former Megan Cory, a 2011 Shelbyville graduate who was an assistant coach with the Golden Bears prior to her promotion. “The energy this year is a little bit different, I think, in a great way. Today, I think the fans saw it. We were loud. We were happy no matter what happened. I think they all believe in each other.”

Leffler knows the schedule gets tougher in week two with Bloomington North coming to town Tuesday and a trip Thursday to Columbus North followed by the two-day Castle Invitational Friday and Saturday in Evansville where the Golden Bears will face a strong northern Illinois team Friday in Lincoln Way Central, two more pool play games Saturday morning against Evansville North and Bedford North Lawrence before a to-be-determined Saturday afternoon finale.

“I am still trying to figure that out,” laughed Leffler when asked how she will handle that schedule. “We definitely will have to see some different people out in the field and figure it all out. We’ve been running different situations at practice so I think the girls are prepared to be thrown into a spot they are maybe not the most comfortable in.”
